CBD as Preventative Medicine
“The preventative aspects of CBD on the human body are truly amazing.” Project CBD recently published an excerpt, Seven ways CBD can be used to prevent disease, from a new book by Leonard Leinow and Juliana Birnbaum entitled CBD: A Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis. https://www.projectcbd.org/about/herbal-medicine/cbd-preventative-medicine
” My synopsis is taken from the article above along with individual links to corresponding articles within each disease type. Caution some of the articles refer to the benefits of THC also. :-)”
Reduce Risk of Diabetes and Obesity
In 2015 an Israleli-American biopharmaceutical collective began stage 2 trials relating to using CBD to treat diabetes. The research demonstrated that CBD helps convert white fat into weight reducing brown fat, promoting normal insulin production and sugar metabolism.
Excess insulin promotes the conversion of sugars into stored fat and leads to weight gain and obesity. Current research about the effect cannabinoids have on insulin regulation may lead to a breakthroughs in the prevention of obesity and type 2 diabetes. https://www.projectcbd.org/search/node/diabetes
Improve Cholesterol Profiles and Lower Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
In a 2013 study that measured data from 4,652 participant’s metabolic systems compared non CBD users to current and former users. It found that current users had higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) “good cholesterol”.
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder involving the progressive depositing of plaque in the arteries. CBD and its anti-inflammatory properties have shown to slow the progression of atherosclerosis. https://www.projectcbd.org/atherosclerosis
Reduce Risk of Cancer
A 2012 study found that animals treated with CBD were significantly less likely to develop colon cancer after being induced with carcinogens in a laboratory. Numerous studies have been done (outside of the US) on using cannabinoids to treat cancer. I found information on studies on many types of cancer including Brain, Breast, Colon, Endocrine, Kaposi Sarcoma, Leukemia, Lung, Prostate and Skin. https://www.projectcbd.org/cancer.
Improve Brain Health and Create Resilience to Trauma and Degeneration
Cannabinoids are neuroprotective which means they help maintain and regulate brain health. As we age the creation of new neurons in the brain slows down significantly. A 2008 study showed that low doses of CBD encouraged the creation of new nerve cells in animals, even in aging brains. CBD also helps prevent other nerve-related diseases like neuropathy and Alzheimer’s disease. https://www.projectcbd.org/search/node/Alzheimer%E2%80%99s
Protects Against Bone Disease and Helps Heal Broken Bones
CBD helps the process of bone metabolism, this is the cycle in which old bone material is replaced by new at a rate of about 10% per year. CBD has been shown to block an enzyme that destroys bone building compounds in the body, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. CBD also helps the process of new bone-cell formation helping to speed up the healing of broken bones. https://www.cell.com/cell-metabolism/fulltext/S1550-4131(09)00202-2
Protects and Heals the Skin
The skin has the largest number of CB2 receptors in the body. CBD infused lotions, oils and salves applied topically, provide more powerful antioxidants than vitamins E and C and can repair damage from UV rays and environmental pollutants. Additionally, there are well documented cases of people curing melanoma and carcinoma-type skin cancer. https://www.projectcbd.org/search/node/skin
Cannabinoids have been proven to have anti-inflammatory effect in numerous studies.
Inflammation is involved in a wide spectrum of diseases and conditions in the human body. The symptoms of inflammation include: visible signs of aging, susceptibility to bacterial, fungal and viral infections, acid reflux, cancer, skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne, arthritis, bronchitis, chronic pain, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, candidiasis and urinary track infections. https://www.projectcbd.org/inflammation
More studies are definitely needed in addition to changes at the Federal level (but that’s another blog). However, as you can see CBD and other cannabinoids have a tremendous healing and preventative effect on our bodies. I would encourage you to do some investigating on your own. Just Google CBD and “name your ailment” and see what comes up.
